Kawa o te Marae - Parawera follows te kawa o Tainui tuu mai, tuu atu. This is a custom of Tainui set by our tupuna to distinguish our culture.
Pōwhiri - The pōwhiri or ritual of encountering the marae has been performed by Māori for many generations. Although was used to determine friend or foe today the art of pōwhiri is to welcome visitors to the marae and build relationships. A pōwhiri can be viewed as tapu and noa moving from a state of visitor to noa a visitor welcomed. The first introduction to our relationship is at the tomokanga-Te Taumata, the gateway to the marae atea. All those entering the marae will wait until the first karanga (call) from the hau kainga. The karanga will be reciprocated by the manuwhiri waiting to enter the marae. At this point the ope (group) will move into the marae atea.
Karanga - Ko te hua o te karanga, he honore, he whakawatea
Whaikorero (speeches) - A whaikorero will have several parts it will follow pending on the kaumātua. The first acknowledgement is to Kiingi Tuheitia and to those who have passed, then would usually refer to the Kaupapa of the pōwhiri and the relationship. This will continue until all speakers have spoken. Tangata whenua may give the rakau of whaikorero to manuwhiri this is a common process.
Koha (gift) - The manuwhiri could give tangata whenua a koha but there is no expectation of a koha. A koha is an acknowledgement of valued contributions given and received responsibly.
Waiata - It is common to have a waiata after each whaikorero and when a koha is laid. A waiata is to emphasize the whaikorero. At Parawera we traditionally follow waiata taught to them by Pumi Taituha.
Kai - The sharing of kai is the last ritual to complete the process of a pōwhiri. The significance of kai is humbling but has been used to determine you as a friend or foe. We provide kai in Te Waenganuitanga o te iwi where everyone will join and embrace the Kaupapa of the pōwhiri. The kai would be blessed by a kaumātua in attendance. This may not necessarily be tangata whenua. At Parawera karakia mo te kai is commonly provided by whomever is appropriate.
